Repetitive components of Fritillaria genomes

The genus Fritillaria (Liliaceae) comprises species with some of the largest genomes so far reported. Ambrožová et al. examine the contribution of major repetitive elements to the genome obesity found in the genus and find that the giant genomes are composed of many diversified retrotransposon families, without preferential amplification of particular repeats. An extremely AT-rich satellite builds up heterochromatic bands in North American species.
