Plant architecture results from organogenesis, abortion and organ size acquisition, and these processes are regulated by assimilate availability. Jullien et al. modify the functional–structural plant model GreenLab to show that the costs of ramification compromise the source–sink ratio during seed filling in winter oilseed rape, Brassica napus. This work is a significant first step in the construction of a structure–function model that can simulate a crop with such a complex form.
