Gender-specific costs of reproduction in a dioecious shrub
In dioecious species females generally endure higher reproductive costs, although compensatory mechanisms may foster resource uptake during reproduction. Álvarez-Cansino et al. conduct a manipulative experiment in which inflorescence buds of Corema album are removed, and find trade-offs between reproductive and vegetative biomass and delayed costs of reproduction in both water status and growth variables. The results show gender-related differences in resource storage and use.
